This September, St Luke’s Hospice held a campaign that highlights shopping sustainably with their stores.
They have 17 locations across Sheffield, including prime spots for students, such as Crookes, Ecclesall and The Moor.
John Highfield, St Luke’s media manager, spoke to us and said: “It is a fantastic way of saving money for yourself and supporting a good cause.”
Budgeting as a student is tough, but by shopping for pre-loved items, you’re supporting the hospice and saving on those extra expenses.
John added: “The retail chain is absolutely essential to everything we do but it wouldn’t work without the people of Sheffield being extremely generous with their donations.”
St Luke’s have previously worked with the University on their sustainable fashion show last year, where students modelled clothes from their store in The Moor.
We spoke to one of the models, Coleen Jebi.
Coleen expressed how much she enjoyed it as they had a ‘mixed bag with different styles’.
She said: “I believe charity shops are great options if you want to save money while still having lots of options.”
Stores like H&M and Primark may give you that dopamine hit when buying a £20 top, but the satisfaction of securing multiple, high quality and long-lasting items at the same price, is unparalleled.
Shopping sustainably is a way to spend less on clothes whilst still enjoying the fun of discovering unique items along the way.
We reached out to charity shop influencer, Faye Wagstaffe.
She told us how micro trends encourage buying items that will only be worn once or twice.
She said: “It’s really important to highlight Sustainable September to get people who might not be aware of the good things about buying pre-loved.
Faye added: “If your struggling with budgeting, keep going with the charity shop, I know when I was a student, it was really easy to subscribe to trends
“Once you do find something that you love, you’ll want to wear it again and again.”
