Hi everyone!
For those that I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, I am Annie, this year’s Wellbeing and Sports Officer. I have just completed my fourth year of medicine and have been heavily involved in sport during my time here, acting as the Club Captain at Trampolining for the last three years. My role as Wellbeing and Sports Officer involves looking after and promoting everyone’s wellbeing whilst at university, as well as supporting and encouraging student participation in sports.
This year, I want to improve the inclusivity and accessibility of sport at our university, in addition to expanding the range of opportunities that are available. I’m also committed to integrating Wellbeing into a part of everyday student lives.
In October I am launching an exciting new project called ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’. The aim is to offer a range of free wellbeing and sporting activities at the SU and Goodwin every Wednesday afternoon. This will provide you with an opportunity to take a break from your studies, explore new activities, make friends and get active.
Taking part in sport has certainly been the highlight of my time at Sheffield – I definitely would have left during my first year if it wasn’t for Trampolining. I have had so many amazing experiences; competing in different cities around the country, learning and developing new skills whilst being on committee and forming lifelong friendships and memories.
Joining a sports club provides you with a chance to take a break from your studies, mix with a range of different people and make friendships like no other, and let’s not forget the benefits that it can have on both your physical and mental health.
There are many ways that you can take part in sport during your time here. We have 57 sports clubs, so there is something for everyone. I would encourage you to head to our Sports Fair on 22 September to find out more information. It doesn’t matter if you have never tried it before (or even heard of it!), all of our clubs would love to see new members joining either competitively or just for fun. If you are not sure about committing right away, make sure you look out for the ‘Give it a go’ sessions where you can try different sports without purchasing a membership first.
If joining a club isn’t your thing then there are still plenty of opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity whilst at university. You can compete with your friends or department each week in our campus leagues, keep fit by purchasing a Goodwin Gym membership or if you live in halls then explore our free sports sessions as part of the Residence Life programme.
The Black and Gold community is like no other, and we really look forward to welcoming you into it this year!
