A Student Guide to Sheffield

If it’s nights out, cosy cafes or shopping that you’re into, Sheffield offers more than enough for students to do when they’re not in lectures.

Importantly, most are within walking distance from the university and are student budget friendly.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to find them all yourself – here’s the best spots in Sheffield to get on your radar:

Suggestions for the foodies

Kommune on Angel Street  is a one stop shop. If you’re looking for a variety of cuisines in one place, it offers anything from burgers to bao buns and curries, all from independent kitchens.

If you prefer restaurants to food courts, Proove Pizza is a must. Recently opening a second store in Orchard Square, their first can be located in Broomhill – not far from the SU. They offer lunchtime deals from Monday to Friday and have an authentic range of Neapolitan pizzas, which you can see being made in pizza ovens from your table.

Something a little less fancy up your street? The perfect hangover cure has got to be Porkies on Barber Road, offering a very affordable English breakfast and a great selection of sandwiches.

The perfect study spot

The Information Commons offers everything from silent study, to group areas and bookable rooms all across 6 floors, but don’t forget to try out The Diamond library on floor 4 and other study spaces in The Wave, and The Heartspace. If you prefer silent study, Western Bank has a huge space overlooking the picturesque Weston Park pond.

For a change of scenery from the university, why not try studying in a café, a personal favourite is 200° coffee shop on Division Street (and if you download their app and refer a friend, you can get free coffee!).

Nightlife

Despite being under threat of closure The Leadmill remains an amazing night out, especially for those into Indie music.

If you don’t fancy the SU for Roar or Pop Tarts then West Street is lined with bars, which make for a great bar crawl. Molly Malone’s is a classic choice, which frequently has live music, and if you want to watch live sport with a pint then The Cavendish is calling your name.

Wholesome activities

If you’re looking for a relaxing activity or something a little more sober, then Sheffield is home to several unique cafes which offer more than just coffee. Fired Arts on Ecclesall Road, allows visitors to paint pottery – a super calm environment to chat and doodle.

Tabby Teas on Cemetery Road is Sheffield’s first cat café, and a recent addition to Sheffield’s range of cafés is Builder’s Brew Cafe. This newbie offers a huge range of Lego sets you can build while catching up with friends. It’s open in the evenings too, which means it could make a unique date night.

With all of these suggestions don’t forget to book ahead of time as spaces quickly fill up.

Shop ‘til you drop

Eco-conscious fashion and vintage shopping has become synonymous with the student lifestyle, and there are some great options all over Sheffield. You can find Glass Onion and Preloved Kilo on Division street, and Freshmans Vintage Store on Carver street.

Charity shops should also get a mention. I can highly recommend St Luke’s on The Moor, which is one of Sheffield’s newest additions, as well as White Rose on Ecclesall Road. Both have a more stylized and boutique feel compared to other charity shops and you don’t have to search too hard to find some absolute gems.

Get outdoors

Finally, a guide to Sheffield would not be complete without mentioning the Peak District. If you don’t mind travelling out of the city, students can easily jump on a bus to enjoy the beauty of the Peaks. Good days out include Castleton and Bakewell, where you can find lots of cosy pubs and a good range of walking routes.
