Auditions for USLES Production to take place this week

The University of Sheffield Light Entertainment Society (USLES) have announced their upcoming audition dates for the group’s semester one show. Taking place across two nights this week, the society, which recently performed their summer production The Shivers, are looking for their next cadre of characters for the show, set to be performed in December. It has not yet been announced what their show will be.

In a post on the group’s social media account earlier this week, they announced the time and location of their two audition dates, as well as urging everyone “whether you’re quite the actor, or think it might just be fun”, to come along and try out for a role. The auditions are taking place on October 2nd and 4th in Gallery Room 3 of the Students’ Union. They also took the opportunity to promote their Give it a Go session this week, to allow unsure auditionees to experience USLES before jumping into auditions.

USLES are one of the university’s three theatrical societies, alongside the Sheffield University Theatre Company (SUTCo) and the Sheffield University Performing Arts Society (SUPAS), and focuses primarily on slapstick and comedic productions, more often than not written by their own members. Having already staged Martha Allison’s Chosen Ones in May, and The Shivers in September, this new production will be the third of the year for the group.

Unlike both SUTCo and SUPAS, however, USLES have an inclusive auditions policy, meaning that every audition attendee is certain to have a role in the upcoming production, regardless of performance. USLES also uses their performances to fundraise for charities selected by their members. This month’s show, The Shivers, was used to raise money for Mermaids UK, a charity supporting Trans+ and gender-diverse children and young people.

Merely one day after the end of The Shivers, their appears to be no rest for the USLES, as they are already steaming ahead with their next production and beginning the search for the group’s next cast. With two months before their next, currently-unknown production, potential auditionees will be avidly preparing for their next chance to enter the spotlight.
