Cagey draw at Hillsborough sends FA Cup tie to a replay

Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle couldn’t be separated at Hillsborough after a goalless draw in the FA Cup 1st Round.

The first major chance fell to Camara for The Pilgrims, but Peacock-Farrell got a foot to it to prevent the visitors taking an early lead. Adeniran had the hosts’ first shot, as he looked to shoot across goal after Berahino picked him out but could only fire his effort straight at Cooper.

On the half hour mark, Plymouth had the best chance of the game up till then. Camara’s pass for Hardie was too long, but he still got on the end of it, putting the ball into a dangerous area. Wednesday managed to scramble the ball behind for a corner.

The game was scoreless at the break, in a rather cagey opening 45 minutes that saw both sides struggle to create any major chances. Grant’s effort from range had Peacock-Farrell worried, but it was just off target, hitting the roof of the net.

The Owls started the second half strongly on the whole however, as they enjoyed spells of possession and were able to put some pressure on the visitors. Substitute Dele-Bashiru played a wonderful backheel into Palmer, who could only put his shot straight at Cooper. Berahino’s effort soon after forced a smarter stop from the keeper.

Plymouth had a brilliant chance with 12 minutes to go, as Garrick forced a wonderful fingertip save from Peacock-Farrell, which still needed to be cleared off the line to keep the score level. Gregory aimed a cross at the far post towards the end of the game, but it instead sailed over the bar without finding a target.

Wednesday thought they should’ve have had a penalty late on, as Shodipo went down after beating the keeper to the ball, but the referee waved the appeals away.

Wing had a big chance to win the tie in added time, as he shot on the half volley under little pressure in the box, but skied his effort.

The game will now go to a replay at Home Park after an even affair at Hillsborough.
