Catcalls of Sheffield to host Photography Exhibition in December

The activist group Catcalls of Sheffield have announced they will be hosting a photography exhibition Chalking for Change in collaboration with the venue Arts in the Right Place.

The group, which began chalking experiences of harassment across Sheffield in April, will be launching the exhibition on December 13th, as well as using the event to raise money for their campaigns.

Announced this afternoon on social media, the campaign, which has just broken two thousand followers on Instagram, called the exhibition “a rollercoaster of a project” that they “cannot WAIT to have everyone see”.

“We’ll be hosting an opening night on the 13th (more details to follow) with a talk and raffle”.

Catcalls of Sheffield is an intersectional, non-profit and grassroots campaign group that works to highlight the prevalence of street harassment in Sheffield.

Inspired by the Catcalls of New York group and Chalk Back movement in 2016, its founders Babhravi Krishnan and Flo Rushton created a similar campaigning platform that aims to “integrate [their] values into a comprehensive strategy”, aiming to tackle catcalling, dismantle bigoted cultures and empower victims, whilst raising awareness among the wider community.

Their work has been created at a wide variety of locations around the city, including Glossop Road, Division Street and West Street, as well as the Foundry and wider Students’ Union.

Their latest project, the Chalking for Change exhibition, will be on display from December 13th to December 20th at 38 Haymarket, towards the north east of the city centre.

Whilst details are understandably scarce about the content of the exhibition itself, it is widely expected to focus heavily on the work of Catcalls of Sheffield and similar ‘chalking’ activist movements, as well as the progress that has been made in these areas.

Whilst Catcalls of Sheffield’s latest project was an unexpected addition to the group’s portfolio, it has been widely well received, with members of the student and wider communities already pledging to be there during the exhibition’s run.

As the community awaits further details about Chalking for Change, today’s announcement has left the Sheffield community in even greater awe of the Catcalls of Sheffield team and everything that they have accomplished in a few short months.

With less than a month until the exhibition opens, the anticipation is well and truly building to see what Krishnan and Rushton have awaiting their ever-growing legion of supporters.
