Ex-Labour Sheffield MP wouldn't support Corbyn-led government

Angela Smith, independent MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, wouldn’t support a government of national unity led by Jeremy Corbyn.
This comes after the Labour leader wrote to the leaders of the major parties, as well as a number of high-profile backbenchers yesterday to suggest a no-confidence vote in the Prime Minister, followed by a government of national unity led by Corbyn.
A spokesperson for Angela Smith MP said that she wouldn’t support the idea, adding: “She would support a government of national unity, but not lead by Corbyn. He’s not likely to command the support required, whereas someone else might.”
Smith left the Labour Party earlier this year along with a number of other MPs in protest at Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, forming The Independent Group and subsequently Change UK. However, she left the party alongside Chuka Umunna, Heidi Allen and others following its poor showing in May’s European elections, and now sits with ‘The Independents’.
