Forge Press Survey – Study Life

The IC is the top study space, female students are more on top of work, and ROAR-goers miss an average of 9 lectures

Forge Press conducted its first student survey after Christmas to find out your thoughts and experiences of student life at The University of Sheffield. The survey had respondents from a range of year groups and subjects, with over 100 students completing the questionnaire. We have broken the results down and crunched the numbers of our anonymous survey and split it into three parts: study life, sex and relationships, and uni lifestyle. In this article we will be focusing on hitting the books – study life.

Information Commons claims best study space on campus

The Information Commons has been crowned the best study space at The University of Sheffield, according to the survey conducted by Forge Press.

In a debate that is somewhat hotly debated amongst Sheffield students, a definitive answer was provided by our survey, with 56.8% voting for the IC; its closest contender, Western Bank Library, garnered only 15.8% of the vote.

Western Bank Library, whilst being the second best study space, also found itself voted the third worst building on campus, showing its status as a marmite figure. One student went as far as describing the library as “cursed”.

Results from the survey also showed a higher proportion of women (63%) prefer the IC compared to men (48%).

Female students one step ahead on assessments

The survey also revealed that on average, female students begin working on their assignments five days before their male counterparts.

Female students on average started preparing for their deadlines or exams 21 days before.

Rather unsurprisingly, the most common themes as to what keeps students from revising was their phones –  social media and scrolling through TikTok – as well as spending time with friends.

The average ROAR-goer has missed nine lectures since start of year

Hangovers were also an issue for students. A whopping 55% of students said that they had missed at least one lecture or seminar since the start of this academic year due to being hungover. 9.3% of that 55% said there were ‘too many to count’.

Being on a Wednesday, the sports night we all know and love, ROAR, was bound to contribute heavily to this. In fact, 88% of those who said ROAR was their favourite night in Foundry said they had missed at least one teaching session due to being hungover.

The average ROAR-goer has missed around nine lectures since the start of the academic year, the survey showed – and counting.

Hicks building voted worst university building

18% of students surveyed said the Hicks Building was the University of Sheffield’s worst building. This was closely followed by Broad Lane, with 13% of the vote.

One student’s dislike for Broad Lane was summed up by them putting the word ‘building’ in quote marks, alluding to the fact you have to walk through the Frederick Mappin building to reach it.

Another honourable mention was the Pam Liversidge building which was described as “difficult to navigate”.

SU the hotspot for quick campus grub

The SU was leaps and bounds ahead of the competition as the place to go for your lunch-time campus refuel.

The plethora of choices in the union meant 46% of students named one of the SU outlets as their favourite place to get food on campus.

However, John’s Van was Sheffield students’ individual favourite place to get food, gaining 18% of the vote compared to the runners up, Grill & Go, who achieved 10.5%.
