Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot!

Bonfire Night is fast approaching and what uni student doesn’t love a reason to celebrate? Don’t worry if you’ve not already got plans though, because here are a few ideas for how to spend Bonfire Night 2025.

Big events

The two main fireworks events in Sheffield are the ‘Autumn Lights’ at the Don Valley Bowl and the Botanical Garden’s ‘Illuminate the Gardens’. It is the fourth time that the ‘Autumn Lights’, which is the largest touring firework spectacular in the UK, is returning to Sheffield and this year promises to be just as brilliant as ever! As well as two firework displays, there will also be live performers, fairground rides and street food stalls there for you to enjoy. You can find tickets and more information at www.autumnlights.co.uk

This year is the eights and final year of ‘Illuminate the Gardens’ at Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens. It is more than just a firework show (although there will be two firework displays each night!): over 10 breathtaking illuminated installations that will light up the entire park. ‘Illuminate the Gardens’ prides itself on having a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, with the first firework display each evening being a ‘low bang’ display, possibly making it a better option for people who are sensitive to noise. The event also has a range of street food stalls and a licenced bar so it could make for a great evening out! You can find tickets (which you need to buy in advance) and more information at https://www.illuminatethegardens.co.uk/event-information/

Watch the fireworks for free

One great advantage of living in a hilly city is that you can watch fireworks going off all over the city without having to part ways with your money. A student hotspot for Bonfire Night is Bole Hills up in Crookes as it gives some amazing views over the city so you can catch displays happening down below you.

Have a cosy night in

Obviously, not everyone likes fireworks so, as an alternative, you could organise to have a cosy night in with some of your friends. Why not spend some time baking or watching your favourite film?

No matter what you decide to do this Bonfire Night, make sure you wrap up warm and enjoy time with yourself, your friends and fireworks!
