As the days get darker and we go outside less, it is more important to have a cosy room to spend the time in.
Your room is a personal space and should be a haven catered to you, which means cosiness looks different for everyone. To achieve this, the place to start is finding your style.
For me, the antique and vintage look is very comforting, but I also love nature, so I have tried to bring these aspects into my room. I used a green and natural-toned colour scheme with plants and small pots from antique shops, to make me feel cosy.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming to see blank, empty walls, which is why I have created this list of my key tips to break things down, meaning getting your perfect winter wonderland doesn’t cause more stress than it removes:
Lighting
Rather than using a main overhead light, it is by far more cosy to use smaller warm ones such as lamps, fairy lights and candles to create atmosphere.
Textures
A soft rug and bedding that makes you want to leap into it increases comfort. Think cotton duvets for extra warmth but topped with velvet throws for added je ne sais quois. A cosy room is about feel and practicality, as well as the look.
Declutter
A tidy room is a cosy room. Too much mess can be stressful to see and can also take away from all the effort you put into decorating. Tidying and taking care of your room is also a way to practise self-care and take pride in your space, add trays to dump random objects and make sure you have good storage so that tidying doesn’t become an everyday burden.
Photos and Mementos
To add a personal touch, it is nice to have pictures of friends and family on the wall – especially if you feel homesick. You could also try putting souvenirs or trinkets on shelves to remind you of happy memories on a daily basis.
Seasonal decorations
It can be fun to add seasonal accessories to your room to keep things interesting. Around this time of year, maybe some tiny Christmas trees or snowflake bunting could add festive cheer? However, make sure the ornaments fit in with the rest of the room. It’s no good making sure you tidy just to have your festive decorations add more clutter – they should add a finishing touch rather than the main focus.
Create a Corner
By isolating a corner and focusing on making it separate from your desk and bed, it can help break up the room and create variety. I recommend a reading nook with a comfy chair, side table and lamp. This is a perfect way to make use of a room’s shape and quirky alcoves to create inviting spaces too.
