The Sheffield Latin & Ballroom Society, one of the university’s dance groups, have revealed an upcoming Dance Social for charity, and have called upon performance groups to get involved.
The group, which is open to students from both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, will take place in Uni Central, in Sheffield Students’ Union, in May.
This event will be the second charity event the group have run this year, following last semester’s Strictly Come Dancing competition in October.
Posting the callout to social media yesterday afternoon, the Latin & Ballroom Society said that they are “looking for performance/dance societies to show their skills by taking over one of the 12 hours [they] have booked to teach a dance style, put on a performance, etc.”
“This is in order to raise money for charity (charity [to be decided]), which we will do by charging people a charitable donation to enter each class/event!”.
The group have asked for interested societies to get in contact.
The Latin & Ballroom Society, open to dancers of all abilities, run dance classes for both causal and competitive dancers, regularly attending dance competitions across the country.
Their next competition, to be held at the famous home of dance in Blackpool, takes place next weekend.
Having previously held charity collaborations this year, most famously with the groups’ Strictly Come Dancing competition, this is the first event whereby contributing student societies will fundamentally shape the event themselves.
Whilst their Strictly Come Dancing event saw participating societies join the established competition programme, this charity event focuses instead of providing performance groups a platform to perform something of their own choosing, within the wider framework of the Latin & Ballroom Society’s event.
Previous charity collaboration partners have included Feminist Society, QuizSoc, Sheffield Bears Ice Hockey and Taylor Swift Society.
Details may be elusive so far, but the announcement of Latin & Ballroom Society’s latest charity event may be their most ambitious yet, with a 12-hour marathon set of performances in one of the semester’s final weeks.
With the date, location and premise set, Latin & Ballroom Society now eagerly await society respondents to their latest collaboration callout.
Sheffield Latin & Ballroom Society’s Charity Dance Social will take place in Uni Central in the Sheffield Students’ Union on May 6th
