The Sheffield Latin and Ballroom Society (ShefLABS) have raised over £500 for charity from their recent Strictly Come Dancing competition event. The annual dance competition brought together societies and students from both The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam universities to compete for the coveted glitter ball trophy. Having raised over £2000 at last year’s event, the 2024 incarnation was another success in the society’s proud history.
In an announcement on social media, the group thanked “everyone who helped [them] raise over £500 at the event, with a large portion going towards helping reduce instances of domestic abuse and sexual assault by going to our charities Sheffield Women’s Aid and Cranstoun! […] Thank you to those who came to support or anyone who helped out behind the scenes and allowed us to put on such a wonderful event!”
The charity event, run annually by the Latin and Ballroom Society, saw five couples, comprising a ShefLABS professional and an amateur dancer paired up to compete against one another and represent their societies. With participating societies including QuizSoc, FemSoc, Architecture Society, Swift Society and Hallam Cheer & Dance, students from across the city were brought together out of a love of dancing and a common goal to raise money for local causes.
Sheffield Women’s Aid is a charity dedicated to housing women and children escaping domestic violence. Having been established in 1974, the group focuses on maintaining an inclusive, compassionate and respectful environment, allowing those fleeing violence to feel safe and heard in the Steel City. Cranstoun supports adults, children and young people facing a variety of issues, including homelessness, alcohol and drug abuse, among others. Their person-centred work aims to rehabilitate and aid those seeking help to recover and overcome the difficulties they face through positive transformation.
With just one night of fundraising, the Sheffield Latin and Ballroom Society have raised a significant amount of money to support crucial charities within our city, carrying out important work in our local communities. Another successful Strictly Come Dancing event down, the group have raised funds and the profiles of these charities, helping to improve lives in the city we all call home.
ShefLABS’ Strictly Come Dancing was performed on October 15th at The Foundry
