Latin & Ballroom Society announce annual Strictly Competition date

The Sheffield Latin & Ballroom Society (LABS) have revealed their first major project of the 2024/25 academic year. Following its successful running this year, the group’s annual Strictly Come Dancing show is returning to Foundry in October, with dancing slots available to aspiring Latin and Ballroom pairs, or individuals who wish to be part of a duo.

In a post on the group’s social media pages yesterday, the dancing society revealed their event dates, saying: “Hey SHEFLABERS! Our annual Strictly come dancing event is now booked for Tuesday 15th October! […] More information will be available closer to the time!”. This event follows this year’s incarnation, which saw students from both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University come together to compete to be named winners by an expert panel of judges.

This year’s event also was used to raise money for Sheffield Mind, a charity dedicated to supporting those with mental health issues across the city. The event raised over £2100 for the charity, which was widely praised for the relatively small-scale competition. Sheffield LABS have yet to announce whether this year’s event will also be a fundraiser, or which charity this would be for if this is the case, but it is widely expected to be as popular as previous incarnations.

The group, which provides Latin and Ballroom dance classes for beginners to advanced dancers, as well as taking part in competitions, have also revealed they are looking for competitors to join the line-up for the upcoming show. All those who take part do so as part of a pair, so potential dancers who show an interest individually can be paired up to ensure as many people as possible can take part. The group has asked anyone interested to contact them for more information.

The Sheffield LABS Strictly Come Dancing competition is a staple of the university society dance calendar, drawing crowds from across the city to watch fantastic dance for a great cause. We may be four months and an entire summer break away from the event, but the group are already preparing to begin the new academic year in style and showcase the talent of their members.
