Spectators and staff at Hillsborough Stadium were left waiting in the cold tonight after the Owl’s match against Accrington Stanley was postponed at the last minute.
The postponement comes after the pitch was deemed unsuitable due to a heavy downpour that waterlogged the field.
Questions were raised throughout the day on whether the match would still take place or not through circulated photos of flooding on the pitch, but despite this, staff still failed to act, and a pitch inspection occurred just an hour before fans should have entered the stadium.
At 4:30 pm, the official Sheffield Wednesday Twitter page tweeted: ”The referee will conduct a pitch inspection at Hillsborough at 5:30 pm. We will bring you further updates as soon as possible.”
Workers were only made aware of the potential postponement of the game while they were en route to the stadium themselves.
The club’s failure to contact workers about the issue meant that its employees were left standing outside for over an hour as the heavy rain and winds continued.
At this time, it remains unclear whether workers will be paid for their time travelling and the time they spent standing around on shift.
The match will take place on a rearranged date, but the official details are yet to be confirmed.
