Forge Press spoke to Elliott Hill who is running for the role of Liberation & Activities Officer in this year’s Student Union Elections. We asked him about his motivations behind applying, his plans for campaigning, overall manifesto and more!
When asking Elliott about his motivation to apply for the role, he said “I’ve seen some of the amazing work that the previous officer teams have done. I’ve been lucky enough to work with them quite closely as well. So the opportunity to get involved and be able to make changes for students similar to myself.”
We asked Elliott about what he believes the main issues are affecting students. He replied “One thing I’m really focussing on is part time work and people struggling with student finance. I think the system at the moment is really unfair.”
The three main points of Elliott’s manifesto are “My first one is to make liberation visible. I want it to be clear to all students from day one about what the SU can do for them. I want to improve the finance and training for committees and encourage more collaboration. And then finally, I want to, as I said, support people who work part-time by running dedicated socials and events for them.”
Elliott’s plans for campaigning are: “to get everywhere on campus. I’m doing a day to really push the “make liberation visible” policy as well. Students will hopefully spot me out and about wearing a hi-vis.”
We asked Elliott the first thing he’d change if he was successful in the role. He told us “they need to stop weaponizing their attendance system to make education accessible for people. The state of encore lecture captures, for example, is just not acceptable and it’s really easy for them to change.”
Some of Elliott’s favourite things at University have been “ TSC, which is the activity I do. We do the tech downstairs in the foundry for club nights and gigs. I really loved getting involved with that and most importantly, bringing that to new people as well, getting new members in who’ve never done it before and training them on all of that.”
Finally, we asked Elliott about his favourite condiment to have on food. He replied “ Since coming to Sheffield, I’ve been converted completely. It would have to be Hendo’s relish. I’d not heard of it before I came to uni. I put it on everything.”
