The Dorothy Pax was not only an icon in the city but also in the UOS Music Department Society. Our socials at Pax events were always our best-attended, and the venue was such a favorite among committee members that it was mentioned in every introductory post and manifesto for the past two years. The Jazz Hot Six event every month was particularly special to our members, and we’re so pleased the band plans to continue their gigs in Sheffield, but it won’t be the same without the Pax and its iconic decor.
We loved going to the Pax so much that we built a partnership with the team and put on our own events. This partnership was never driven by money—the Pax was so passionate about building a community and making music accessible that they welcomed us with open arms. We held two annual Christmas Cabarets there with much success, but arguably our most successful event was our collaborative open mic, which saw nearly 20 acts take the stage. We even secured government funding for the Pax to hold this event.
Our society owes so much to the Pax, and we’re forever grateful for their kindness, generosity and passion for music. Richard, Briony, and the whole Pax team will be dearly missed, and the cheese-grater chandelier will live in our hearts forever.
