Auditions and backstage interviews with the National Youth Theatre are now accepting applications for this year’s intake. National Youth Theatre aims to bring together budding talent aged between 16 and 25 to teach theatrical skills, whether this is acting and performing, or in the multitude of backstage disciplines that modern theatre requires night after night.
Audition applications consist of a submitted self-tape audition, uploaded to the application webpage. Successful applicants will then receive a second-round online recall, before applications are considered for acceptance into the National Youth Theatre, where applicants can perform in shows, attend professional castings and receive free training up until their mid-twenties! The deadline for audition applications is on March 21st, although if a tape is submitted before January 23rd, applicants will be informed as to whether they have got a recall by the end of February.
As well as opportunities on stage, the National Youth Theatre also provides backstage courses for its successful members. With interviews taking place both online and in-person from March to June, and five courses to choose from including sound design, light design and stage management, there’s something for every future theatre techie! Applications for backstage roles consist of a short informal interview, as well as an application task based on a real-world theatre production scenario. Successful applicants receive their confirmation on May 8th and can then select their summer course. However if unsuccessful, applicants can still access online resources and masterclasses if they are Hub subscribers.
Whether spending your career on stage is something you’ve always been after, or your New Year’s Resolution was to give something new a go, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved with theatre professionals and experts in the industry. As well as doing something (possibly!) completely different to your degree, it may also turn out to be the first day of the rest of your life!
