Nixon, Clay Lead Sheffield Sharks to SLB Cup Title in Dominant Display

The Sheffield Sharks made history on Sunday afternoon, with victory in the SLB Cup final at the Nottingham Arena.

A high-scoring win over the Surrey 89ers meant they became champions in front of 3,000 travelling fans as they beat the side from Guildford for the fourth time this season.

Lead by captain Prentiss Nixon and the game’s MVP Donovan Clay, they took home a 105-97 win to be crowned inaugural champions of the new Super League Basketball Cup.

Despite trailing by two points at half-time, they turned on the style in a dominant second half display.

Remarkably, they had three players – Donovan Clay, Rickey McGill and Prentiss Nixon – score 20 points in the game.

It’s coach Atiba Lyons’ fifth trophy with the Sharks, and the new-look side look to be building something special at the Canon Medical Arena after a crazy off-season saw 18 player changes as owner Vaughn Millette, who is also chair of Super League Basketball, stamped his authority.

This is their first trophy since winning the BBL play-off final in 2016, where current Marketing Manager Mike Tuck won MVP.

It was, however, not to be for the Sheffield Hatters on Finals Day, who lost their final against a ruthless Oaklands Wolves side that won their first trophy in franchise history.
