A monochrome picture of a leafless tree has won the Forge Press and Photography Society joint competition. The picture, taken by HanQing Xing under the theme ‘Twenties’ won the contest run by the student newspaper and creative society, being featured on the newspaper’s social media. The competition, which was announced on April 18th with the deadline on April 22nd, was launched on the social media pages of PhotoSoc with the winner having their image published by Forge and also winning a £15 Amazon voucher for their efforts.
Xing’s black and white image featured a near-bare tree in the foreground, perched on a hill, with the Sheffield countryside stretching out behind it. Complete with fields, small buildings and the peaks in the background behind the tree, the image’s monochrome effect gave the picture a dark, classic feel, contrasting with the colourful spring greenery we’re beginning to feel in the city.
The winning image has been shared across Forge Press’ social media in the same week as the latest and final print edition of the 2023/24 academic year, marking an end to the print coverage of the academic year. As the previous editors begin to hand over to their next committee Xing’s image represents the changing winds, and the new beginnings promising to begin again soon.
PhotoSoc & Forge Press’ ‘Twenties’ competition ran from April 18th to April 22nd
