Queen Elizabeth II has died at Balmoral after 70 years on the throne, announces Buckingham Palace.
Her son King Charles III, said this is a “moment of great sadness” for him and his family, many of whom gathered at the residence throughout the day.
Buckingham Palace announced earlier in the day that Her Majesty was under medical supervision after doctors became concerned for her health.
In a statement this evening, the Palace said she passed away peacefully this afternoon.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952, aged just 25, making her the UK’s longest ever serving monarch.
King Charles said he and the family would be “comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held”.
Camilla, his wife, becomes Queen Consort.
