The University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union has issued advice and guidance for students to keep themselves safe at bars and clubs.
The guidance was published on Tuesday after reports of drink-spiking at the SU’s foundry clubbing venue.
The statement said: “We are aware that there have been several drink spiking incidents in Sheffield recently. Although this is rare in our venues, we would like to reassure students of our commitment to ensuring everyone can have a safe night out.”
The SU’s advice to students is to look out for your friends and to keep an eye on your drink at all times. If you think you have been spiked, tell a member of staff and leave the venue as quickly as possible.
To report an incident, students can email su-complaints@sheffield,ac,uk. The SU will work with South Yorkshire Police to “identify linked incidents in the city and find those responsible.”
The SU now provides ‘spikeys’ (drink covers) at the foundry and bar one. They have also committed to providing the security team with equipment to test drinks that are suspected to have been spiked.
A ‘Time Out Zone’ and a Quiet Room with specially trained members of staff are also available in the SU building.
A minibus service is provided which will take you home from the SU for £1.50. The SU also runs a safe taxi scheme with city taxis. Students can hand their UCard to the driver and collect it the next day from the SU when they come to pay their fare.
