Sheffield SU takes part in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international UN campaign, which was originally created to challenge violence against women and girls.

This campaign runs every year around the world from the 25th November (The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10th December (Human Rights Day). In 2022, partners and family members killed a woman intentionally every 11 minutes.

Globally, over 70% of women in conflict, war, or humanitarian crises experience gender-based violence. With police declaring this year (2024) gender-based violence is a national emergency. The crisis of gender-based violence is urgent.

We also recognise that gendered violence is not simply violence against women and that many marginalised genders and men are not protected against gendered violence, yet are often excluded from the conversation. We also recognise that gender is not the only factor at work in gendered violence and in responses to it.

We are taking these 16 days to gather, learn, and demand change.
