Sheffield United mauled by clinical finishing as Hull claim all three points

Sheffield United fell to a frustrating 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Yorkshire rivals Hull City.

Coming into the match, Hull had failed to win in the league at Bramall Lane since 2010, but took control of the game early when Matty Crooks rifled home after just five and a half minutes.

Sheffield United did get half chances throughout the first half, with two good opportunities falling to Callum O’Hare within quick succession with twenty minutes gone, but he could keep neither header down.

The rest of the first half saw few shots from either side, but Blades looked sharper after the break and quickly begun to pile on the pressure on Ivor Pandur in the Hull goal.

Blades even had the ball in the Hull net after 56 minutes, however it was ruled out for offside and this is the closest that they would come to getting back on level terms.

Both managers made changes to try and shuffle the attacking lineups, sensing that more goals were on the way.

Just seven minutes later, and broadly against the run of play, a smart low cross from Cody Drameh was poked home by substitute Matty Jacob.

Blades still kept up the pressure, with first O’Hare, then Rak-Sakyi, then Campbell all unable to get efforts on target from the edge of the box.

The rout was completed five minutes from time, when after a goalmouth scramble, Harrison Burrows turned home into his own net, sending the over 2,000 Hull fans in the Bramall Lane end into pandemonium.

Having begun this evening knowing they could go top of the Championship with a win, Blades will instead have to look over their shoulders on Monday night, as a Burnley win against Leeds will see the Lancashire club leapfrog the Blades.

Hull move out of the drop zone following their third away league win on the bounce, and move up to 18th. They entertain Stoke City next Saturday, with a 3:00pm kick-off.

The Blades next play when they make the short trip down the M1 to face Derby County, also on Saturday 1st February, at 3:00pm.
