Sheffield Wednesday Ladies fell to AFC Bentley in an enthralling SHWGL cup semi final ending 5-3
Wednesday came into the game in great form having not lost a game since late January. However, despite a steady start they found themselves behind after a quarter of an hour.
Things got worse for Wednesday as they conceded another two identical goals, the latter being a screamer from distance courtesy of midfield enforcer Becky Kendell. The fourth then hit the back of the net, plummeting the spirits in the Wednesday ranks.
With Wednesday staring down the barrel of a four-goal deficit at the interval, Amy Broomhead latched on to a Kirsty Tonner long ball over the top of the Bentley defence and calmly slotted home Wednesday’s first clear cut chance of the game. They went into half time 4-1 down but not completely out of the game after Broomheads’ goal.
This upturn in fortune for Wednesday did not last as almost immediately after the break they were caught down the right-hand side and found themselves 5-1 down with their hopes of reaching the final seemingly dashed.
Despite the four goal deficit the Wednesday ladies did not let their heads drop as they scored two goals in quick succession, a tidy finish from Broomhead who doubled her tally for the day after getting on the end of a Heidi O’Reilly through ball and a long distance chip over the keeper from Renée Simmonite-Scott.
With the score at 5-3, Wednesday were back in the game and threw everything at their opposition’s defence to get the two goals they needed but could not break through as Bentley were simply too good on the day.
Wednesday Ladies will look to bounce back against Rossington in the league next Sunday at the Jubilee Sports Club.
