As my time in office at the Students’ Union draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on this rollercoaster of a year. Three return to plays, very little sport, but so much community. Indeed, despite the bleakness of this year, sport at the University of Sheffield is in one of the most promising positions it’s been in for a long time.
The pandemic has allowed us to tear apart the rule book and start again, and with the opportunity to write a futuristic and ambitious University vision for sport & physical activity, I am confident that significant investment in sport estates development is not far away.
Sport endured an existential crisis this year, and despite this, the hard work of SU Sports Committee and club committees will echo for generations to come, going above and beyond expectations. Club Sport raised over £60,000 for charity before it could even compete. Sporting leaders committed to a holistic equality, diversity and inclusions training programme, and we’re seeing their action plans change their communities.
I am looking forward to passing the baton over to the SU’s first ever Wellbeing & Sports Officer Charlotte McGinley, who I am sure will be a fantastic progress driver in sport.
If nothing else, we held on to that Varsity trophy for yet another year…
