Sports Society Spotlight: Tackling university football

Forge Sports Team

The Forge Press sports team spoke to club captain Laura O’Neill on how to tackle university football and what arises when you join the team.

“Women’s football as a club promotes inclusivity and sportsmanship, encouraging both fun and competitive play,” said O’Neill.

“Women’s football as a club promotes inclusivity and sportsmanship, encouraging both fun and competitive play. We currently have 4 BUCS teams, who compete weekly in differing northern leagues.

“Our 1st team has just won the Northern 1A league for their third consecutive season. Training for our BUCS teams is on a Monday night with matches on a Wednesday. Trials for our BUCS teams are on Monday 25 September 5-7.30pm at Goodwin. We hope to see as many new faces as possible!”

If you do not want to dive straight into trials, O’Neill explained that the club is also holding a ‘give it a go’ session on 24 September 2-4pm at The Wave. Tickets must be purchased in advance; head to the SU website to grab yours.

“As an alternative to BUCS football we offer both campus league football and social football.

“As a team sport, football is a great way to meet new people and make some amazing friendships. We have themed socials almost every Wednesday and regular sober socials.”
