After what feels like a decade of rain, snow, hail and all other bad weather you can name, it’s looking like Sheffield might just be getting that little bit brighter, with sunny days creeping into our calendar and those couple extra degrees blessing us with some well-deserved pub garden breaks and Vitamin D. So, whilst our famously rainy city decides to gift us some extra rays this spring and summer time, it might just be the best time to bask in the sunshine and explore the hidden gem just beside Sheffield: The Peak District. And for those who think of this place with a dread of long walks and muddy shoes, fear not, as I’ve created this guide for all types of people, whether you’re looking for that extra exercise challenge or just a cute pub in the countryside, the Peaks has everything you need to enjoy your spring time. And with all of these places only a short drive away, or a £4 return journey on the bus, you won’t be able to refuse a beautiful day out in the sun.
Starting off with arguably one of the most well-known towns in the Peak District, Buxton is a must-see this spring, with something for everyone to enjoy. Home to Buxton Opera House and surrounded by the Peak District National Park, this town is full of historical attractions, cafes and shops to allow for a jam-packed day out in the sun. And if you fancy something a bit different, why not take a short walk up to Poole’s Cavern, a famous ‘show cave’ which offers guided tours at a discounted price for students. The surrounding areas also offer some great walks, with different levels of challenge, so you know what you’re getting yourself in for! And to take in the beautiful views of the town, Solomon’s Temple is a perfect insta-photo opportunity, with views from miles around. The famous Victorian Pavilion Gardens are also a must-see for tourists, with its own cafe and art gallery open to the public for free. And if you fancy a relax in the evening, Buxton houses many restaurants, pubs and bars to have a cheeky pint or bite to eat before heading home. And for the more budget conscious among you, the Sacro Lounge and Pizza Express are perfect options for students looking to save those extra pennies!
Arguably my personal favourite of the Peak District, and most well-known for its famous puddings, Bakewell is the perfect location to bring in Spring. This picturesque town is home to a range of independent shops and cafes, along with a free outdoor market every Monday. And for the students who love a good thrifting experience, the charity shop scene is bustling with hidden gems and discounted goods. And if you’re like me, a good day out is not complete without a stop off for a coffee. The Gallery Cafe is a personal favourite, with a large range of food and drink options for all. And of course, you can’t forget to try a Bakewell Pudding from one of the famous shops dotted around the town. The Old Original Pudding Shop has been selling these baked goods for over 160 years, so for a taster, and even some merch, make sure to have a try whilst sitting on one of the benches overlooking the River Wye. And for all the lovebirds out there, the love lock bridge is a must-see. And hey, maybe leave your mark by putting your own one on there!
For the more outdoorsy among you, who are wanting a change of scenery from the hustle and bustle of Sheffield, Ladybower Reservoir might just be the perfect day out for you. Full of a range of different walks and cycle routes, this location is perfect for an afternoon stroll or morning work-out. And if you fancy a challenge, Win Hill, a 462 metre high summit, is the perfect way to soak in some breathtaking views of your surroundings, whilst giving your knees an extra workout! And for a treat after all your walking, the cosy Yorkshire Bridge Inn is the perfect pit stop for a cheeky summer pint or a sit down meal.
Another gem of the Peak District, Castleton is a village which boasts breathtaking views, caves, and walks for all abilities. For the more adventurous, Castleton is the perfect place for a whole host of activities. Home to Peveril Castle, if you fancy becoming a history buff, why not take a trip to this Norman Fortress whilst learning fun facts about Sheffield and taking in some stunning views from the top of the hill. Talking of literal ‘gems’, the Blue John Cavern is also a must-see, boasting “the finest that can be seen by the general public in Western Europe”. And if you fancy treating someone special with a one of a kind present, head to the gift shop for merch made from the mineral itself. Don’t forget to also browse the Visitor centre and local businesses. A free museum is available to the public which tells the history of Castleton, and there are many cafes and shops for anyone wanting a sit down and a sweet treat. And if you fancy an extra challenge, Mam Tor, one of the most well-known hills in the Peaks, is just a walk away from Castleton. Websites such as “Visit Peak District and Derbyshire” posts both exciting and in-depth walk ideas for different abilities, so you can soak in all of the surroundings this spring time.
So there you have it, a range of ideas to make the most of the sun this Spring. And with Sheffield known for its pretty dire weather most of the year, as soon as you see a few extra rays, make the most of it, and take your friends, family and loved ones to see a side of Sheffield away from the books and buildings!
