Spring Reads: A short guide to this season’s essential reads.

The past few weeks have marked the arrival of Spring: the season where flowers begin to bloom, the sun shines for longer, and life becomes just a little bit brighter. It’s a time of rebirth and renewal, and what better way to celebrate than with a new (or old!) book?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist is a journey of self-discovery, an inspiring fable about following your heart and trusting life’s journey. Set in the Spanish countryside and a lush desert oasis, this classic novel encapsulates the feeling of hope and revival encouraged by the Spring sun

Newly adapted into a hit series, Daisy Jones & the Six follows a fictional 70s band from their rise to fame to their downfall, recounting the struggles, losses and love they experience on the way. Told through a collection of interviews with individual characters, it’s an easy and engaging read. Romance, drama, and the exciting world of the 70s music scene make it a great read if you’re in need of some escapism, and, of course, a perfect companion to the popular series.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Delia Owens, the author of Where the Crawdads Sing, is a former conservationist, and that certainly shines through in this murder-mystery centred on Kya, a girl raised in the wilderness of the North Carolina marshes, who as an adult finds herself implicated in a murder investigation. More than a simple murder mystery, it explores topical themes of prejudice and human connection through vivid descriptions of the power and beauty of nature. Encouragement to appreciate the world as nature begins to bloom in the transition to warmer months.

My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh

In this lighthearted, satirical parody of modern life, an unnamed protagonist attempts to escape reality by spending a year in a drug-induced sleep with the hope she’ll emerge a new person. It tackles difficult themes with humour and celebrates the human capacity for change, making it an inspiring yet comedic read: perfect if you’re looking to inspire some change in your own life this Spring!
