Spring Superfoods: What to Eat for a Health Boost This Season

Spring is finally on the horizon, and with it comes an abundance of fresh and nutritious produce. When seasonal foods are harvested at their peak ripeness, they retain their maximum nutrients and tend to not be treated with preservatives or pesticides to maintain shelf life as they are locally sourced and readily available. This makes it important for us to explore spring superfoods, their benefits, and simple ways we can add them to everyday meals.

1. Asparagus

Asparagus are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, folate and fiber. Being high in antioxidants, they support immune health, digestion and detoxification. You can incorporate them into meals by having them alongside your omelettes in the morning or roasting them as a side dish for dinner.

2. Strawberries

Packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, strawberries also boosts your immune system and are naturally low in sugar compared to other fruits. An easy way to use them is using it to top your yoghurt or oatmeal bowls in the morning, blending strawberries and other fruits/vegetables for a refreshing smoothie, or eating them frozen.

3. Artichokes

Although they have the reputation of not being a popular vegetable, artichokes are high in fiber, magnesium and antioxidants. They support liver health and digestion. Season and roast them with olive oil, sea salt and lemon juice, then serve them with a lemon-butter/mayonnaise dip. Eating them this way will definitely change your mind about them!

4. Peas

I have my own reservations when it comes to peas, but it is a great source of plant-based protein, fiber and vitamins. It aids in muscle repair and strengthens your gut health. Peas can be used in many ways, be it tossing some into a salad or adding them to your stir-fried rice or soups.

These are just some of the produce which come into season every spring and it is finally time for them to shine. This period is the perfect time to refresh your diet by adding some of these superfoods to your grocery list and being adventurous in trying out new recipes. As the seasons change, incorporating these fresh ingredients into your meals can help with digestion, improve your skin health, and keep you feeling energised!
