An enterprising Sheffield student has created ‘Unizones’, a website which allows users to rate and review their local neighbourhoods.
Intended to assess areas of student housing, the platform’s creation has a deeply personal story behind it.
A Troubling Start:
UniZones founder, Alex Powell, was like any other excited student, looking forward to their university experience.
Their enthusiasm was soon dampened as a result of homophobic abuse they were subject to in their area.
The ordeal was not just emotionally distressing, but also raised serious concerns about their safety.
This Unsettling experience prompted them to take matters into their own hands and create a platform that would empower students to make informed decisions about where they live while considering factors like safety and inclusivity.
Inclusivity at the core:
Officially launched in August with the support of Jamie Shipp, former LGBT+ officer at the Sheffield student’s union, it has since been populated with reviews from students across Sheffield who have faced similar issues.
The user can rate and review based on criteria that includes safety, inclusivity and accessibility; allowing students insight into their prospective living areas, and make more informed decisions as they look for 2nd year accomodation.
Unizones encourages users to share their experiences relating to acceptance and tolerance in their local communities, a feature which the site’s creator sees as integral to its purpose and function.
Alex Powell, founder of UniZones:
“We created UniZones to ensure that no student has to endure the pain and fear we experienced in our local area.
“We believe that everyone, regardless of their background or identity, deserves to live in a place that is safe and inclusive.”
Unziones has evolved into a platform which benefits all students, with the website’s database of reviews reflecting a range of diverse experiences. An invaluable resource for those seeking an inclusive and exciting living environment.
Looking Forward:
As UniZones continues to gain popularity and expand its reach, it serves as a beacon of hope for students across Sheffield.
In a world where discrimination still exists, this platform stands as a reminder that we can all work together to create a more inclusive and safer future for everyone.
So, as you embark on your university journey, remember that UniZones is here to help you find the perfect living space — one where you can thrive, be yourself, and feel safe. After all, everyone deserves that opportunity.
