SU cancels ROAR in response to Girls’ Night In campaign

The University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union has cancelled its student sports night ROAR this week in solidarity with the Girls’ Night In campaign.

Girls’ Night In is a national campaign launched in response to the recent spate of spikings in cities across the country. The movement has organised boycotts of nightclubs and bars to demand action be taken on the growing issue of drink spiking.

Reported cases of spikings in Sheffield have been on the rise, including at the SU’s foundry, where ROAR is hosted weekly.

Sheffield’s girls’ night in has been organised for Wednesday 27th October, which coincides with ROAR this week.

In solidarity with the campaign, the University of Sheffield Students’ Union has cancelled its sports night celebrations.

In a statement, the Sheffield SU officer team said: “We are troubled that it has reached a point where we can’t feel safe on a night out in our city”.

Rather than the usual ROAR club night, the SU will be hosting a student consultation this Wednesday. Students are invited to come to the foundry from 17:30-18:30 and discuss the changes that they would like to see at their Students’ Union to combat drink spiking.
