Student Union part time officer (PTO) and full times officer (FTO) roles have been discussed in the first council meeting of the year.
In terms of FTOs, it has been proposed to effectively change the role of the SU president and remove the formal title.
Another proposal included the introduction of activities and liberation officer as one role, to which some councillors shared confusion.
Concerns were raised over how this would be run, however Daisy Watson, current SU president explained that the two remits do ‘compliment each other’.
With regard to PTOs, the proposal is to introduce a new model where they would shift to a community organiser (CO).
COs will be appointed based on application through the decision of representatives from SU council, Liberation committee, officers and staff.
The role of a community organiser would be to contribute to projects that address community needs.
Councillors voiced their worries over this due to a potential loss of representation and democracy in regards to the appointment system.
However, current PTOs explained how their job is very demanding and they have to work long hours.
A mix of opinions were expressed during this meeting, and further consultation is expected to follow in the next meeting at the end of November.
