The SU Council has rejected a proposal to make the university completely vegan.
On 22 February, economics student Gregory Sedden brought a proposal to the SU council to make all union-owned food outlets 100% plant-based by 2025.
In the meeting, Gregory said: “We have to reduce our meat intake or this world will be destroyed.”
He added: I am autistic myself and a very fussy eater. I couldn’t go to any restaurant before I was vegan,
“I still gave up these products because it’s the right thing to do.”
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board estimated around 10% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture.
Maria Lourido Moreno, Education Officer, said meat products are essential for the financial viability of Bar One.
Mario said: “We can’t be fully vegan without significant financial issues. Instead, we should have more vegan options.”
A student observer during the meeting said: “The choice of the individual to choose a meat sandwich is not more important than the murder of animals.”
The proposal came after the University of Birmingham, Cambridge, and six other universities have passed motions to go 100% plant-based in response to the climate crisis.
In total, 27 councillors voted against the meat-free proposal, against 11 who voted in favour.
