Ahmad Waris (he/him) has been voted as the SU’s new BAME Students’ Part-time Officer with a landslide win of 727 votes out 1,163.
On stage at the results night, he said: “I am feeling really overwhelmed and excited. I would like to honour my parents who have supported me to get here.
A 50% majority is needed for a candidate to win. Candidates with the lowest number of votes are eliminated one round at a time, with their votes redistributed depending on how they were ranked by voters. Ahmad claimed 50% in the first round.
Ahmad’s campaign championed collaboration and cooperation to create change. He would like to see increased social events, exhibitions, and workshops in the name of multiculturalism and representation; address discrimination through raised awareness; prioritise mental health for BAME students; and platform BAME student voices.
