Derick Liew has been elected as the new International and Community Officer after receiving 2,139 votes in the third round of voting.
On stage, Derick said: “I’m ready to fight for everyone. The campaign would not be successful without my mates, my support, and my teammates. I’d like to thank my PhD supervisor for supporting me. Thank you so much!”
Derick was ahead by at least 550 votes in every round of counting, eventually winning by a landslide of 840 votes.
Derick’s aims are to lobby for more tuition fee payment plans for international students and implement a “Sheffield Global Citizen Award” scheme to recognise the impact of students.
He also hopes to work closely with other campus unions to secure benefits that are inclusive of the international community in Sheffield, create more volunteering and fundraising opportunities, and support an inclusive academic curriculum with an emphasis on decolonisation.
He will take over from the current officer, Anna Fedotova, in June.
