Liam Hand has been elected Sheffield Students’ Union President after beating second place candidate Oliver Bureau after five rounds of vote counting.
Hand will take over from now outgoing President Evie Croxford when her term finishes at the end of June.
Speaking on stage at the results event, Hand said: “Thank you to everyone who’s voted for me and helped me with my campaign”
It was a comeback victory for Hand after closing a 326 vote deficit to Bureau after the first place ballots were counted.
At the end of the five rounds, Hand won out by four total votes, the joint-closest result of the elections.
During his campaign, Hand pushed his aim to implement a renters union in the SU to protect student renters and to help reduce the impact of a rising cost of living.
Hand is a student of the Archaeology department which the University will be closing. He promised to continue to advocate against the departments shut down and to oppose the stripping of the School of Language and Culture.
