Grace Cleary has been voted in as Sheffield Students’ Union Liberation Officer beating second-place Liu Liu after trailing during the first four rounds of counting.
Cleary will replace Shona Tulloch as Liberation Officer when their term ends in June. Tulloch was announced as Disabled Students Part-time Officer earlier in the night, making her the first candidate to run in, and win an SU election as a serving elected officer.
Speaking on stage after her victory was announced, Cleary said: “I can’t believe it. Thank you so much to everyone who voted me and my wonderful friends and family who have supported me. You’ve all been fantastic and every candidate.
Cleary beat Liu Liu in the seventh and final round of counting by 133 votes, the largest margin of victory between two candidates in a final round. Both candidates were tied on 461 votes in round five, before Cleary won with 734 total votes.
With a manifesto focussed on improving accessibility at University for students belonging to Liberation groups.
