The Sheffield University Theatre Company (SUTCo) have opened applications for show proposals for the first semester back in September. The biannual process, taking place towards the end of both semesters each year, allows students to pitch their ideas for the shows to perform, and will mark the first process overseen by the recently elected committee.
Taking to social media, the society announced that “SUTCo are looking for three full length plays to take place in first semester next year. Whether it’s something you have seen, read or written yourself, we’re excited to hear from you”. As well as announcing proposal applications, the society have also arranged their pre-proposal interviews for applicants, taking place following the application deadline on May 7th.
The theatre society produces around seven full productions each year, with additional shorts and special events also taking place. The shows produced this academic year have included original scripts Swap the Press and Why We Stay, comedies such as Lights Over Tesco Car Park and The 39 Steps, as well as the Greek tragedy Medea and the international premiere of 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche. The society’s vigorous proposals process aims to identify productions that will be the most entertaining and possible to produce, as well as highlighting any welfare issues that may arise for cast, crew or audiences before the show is approved.
Applicants will need to fill in proposal documents, outlining their production team, ideas and intentions, and welfare concerns regarding their show and submit them to the society before 6pm on May 7th. The interviews on May 8th are designed to discuss any welfare issues and give applicants the opportunity to ask final questions to the committee before proposals take place later this semester. Examples of previously successful proposal documents have been made available, in order to better facilitate anyone wishing to propose getting involved.
SUTCo may not even have finished their productions for this academic year yet but are already beginning the search for the next student crowd-pleasers for new freshers in September. With rumours of many productions already lining up to propose, competition is set to be fierce in the race to become one of SUTCo’s next productions!
SUTCo show applications are open until 6pm on May 7th, with pre-proposal interviews taking place the following day at 1pm-3pm in Committee Central in the Students’ Union. More information & application support can be found at @_sutco on Instagram
