The annual charity screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show is set to return for 2024. The screening, which usually takes place in November, has been moved to coincide with the beginning of Pride Month, showing on June 1st. Accompanied by a shadow cast portraying the characters of the film, the event aims to raise money for local LGBTQ+ charity SAYiT, and will be the third year the screening has taken place.
Announced on Instagram over the weekend, the show’s social media said: “We are thrilled to officially announce we’re on baby! Tickets are now on sale for the first Rocky event we’ve run during Pride Month!”. The cast and creatives have also invited the LGBTQ+ community to “join [their] queer family on Saturday 1st of June, whether you’ve never seen the show or this will be the 50th time, [they] guarantee you ain’t seen it quite like this”.
The event is run as a collaboration between the Horror Society, Drag Society and LGBTQ+ Representative Committee, in order to make the event as inclusive as possible, bringing together the best talents from all three, as well as performers from outside of these societies. The full shadow cast will be performing alongside the film screening, re-enacting every scene and song from the wedding of Brad and Janet, to The Time Warp and beyond!
This year’s event also features an art competition, being run by the LGBTQ+ Committee, where students can submit Rocky Horror fan art for the chance to have their designs featured on show merchandise to be sold at the event.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show was released in 1975, starring Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter, alongside Richard O’Brien and Meat Loaf. It tells the story of a couple who happen upon the home of mad scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter, who is not what they would imagine a scientist to be like, as told by The Criminologist (Charles Gray). The film is an adaptation of the original musical.
With Pride Month on the horizon, the cast and crew of this annual charity event are dusting off their corsets and getting ready to bring you the third iteration of the iconic screening. With the excitement building, are you ready to do The Time Warp again?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show charity event will be taking place at The Showroom Cinema on June 1st. For updates, see @lgbt_rockyhorrorscreening on Instagram, as well as @horrorsoc, @uosdragsoc and @shefflgbtq. Tickets are available here
