VARSITY 2023: The University of Sheffield outclasses Hallam Uni to clinch Men’s 2’s victory by 60 runs.

Defending winners of Men’s 2’s cricket, The University of Sheffield put on an absolute clinic against rivals Sheffield Hallam University at the Hallam Sports Park, winning by 60 runs. Uni of batted first, with skipper Kilby and Relton starting the proceedings.

It was a quiet start, courtesy of some tight bowling from Simpson. The openers didn’t take any risks and kept rotating the strike. Kilby took on Jennings for a boundary. Hallam brought spin of Weatherburn, and he struck with his first ball, dismissing Kilby for 22 as Broomhead took the crease. Hallam had loose moments in the field, giving away some runs and missing a run-out. Scurry removed Broomhead with a short ball for seven as Martin was next. Knapper came on to bowl and produced one of the key moments of the match with a ridiculous caught and bowled of Martin for seven runs.

The Black and Golds kept playing without risks and did not hit a single six. Relton finished with 35 before getting out in the last over. They ended up with 100 for five after 10 overs.

Jones and Jennings came out for Hallam to face up against the spin of Martin. Martin got Jennings out cheaply in the first over, and Hallam faced trouble early. Knapper joined Jones but left shortly in the second over to Matthews as Hallam looked rattled. Wickets kept on tumbling as Hallam lacked stability. Jones got caught out, and Simpson followed him after a wasteful run out dismissal. Uni Of took entire control of the match as they stopped the flow of runs. Hallam felt the pressure and kept losing wickets cheaply. Scurry and Weatherburn took the total from 24 for four to 40 for four as they looked good at the crease. Weatherburn hit the only six of the game before Hallam bundled out for 40 runs, losing by 60 runs. Sleet took two wickets, and Uni Of displayed an all-round performance.`
