Third years, here’s how to begin preparing for those big grad role interviews

  1. Now that the new academic year is approaching, for many students now is the time to start looking for placements, internships and graduate jobs.

If you’re struggling to secure an interview, we’ve rounded up some helpful tips to get you feeling confident and prepared for your early career endeavours – that all start with an interview:

1) Do Your Research

It’s key to learn about the company and get to know their mottos and goals. For

example, some brands commit to becoming more sustainable or more environmentally

friendly whilst others are more focused on diversity and inclusion. Knowing their competitors and company culture can be helpful too.

A solid knowledge of the company you are applying to will not only leave a good impression and put you ahead of the game – it can also help you decide if they’re a good fit for you too!

2) Punctuality

Don’t let running late be the reason you lose out on a job opportunity.

If you don’t make time for your interview, it gives the company a reason to write you off before you get to show yourself off. Check out the office and location in advance if it is a new area to you and give yourself some extra time to get there – and get ready!

If you are behind schedule, remember to phone and let them know.

3) Identify Yourself

Remember to bring a form of photo ID and any important paperwork like a copy of your CV, portfolio or university and exam certificates in case they are required.

While you might not need everything, it’ll always be a relief to have them – and coming prepared is expected, especially at a big and busy company.

4) Take a Sip

Having some water on your is a handy way of reminding you to take time with your answers. Bring some water, or take them up on their drinks offer, so you can take a drink and by yourself time to think before you answer their questions.

Some interviews can last a while too, so by packing a water bottle (and maybe some snacks too) it’ll help you maintain your energy throughout the day. Keeping hydrated is key for your health too.

5) Dress Code

Whether an in person or online interview, choose your outfit wisely to come across

professional and prepared.

Keep your outfit choice smart but opt for something that expresses your personality such as a colourful top paired with smart trousers. Looking put together can make you stand out from other candidates as well as giving you some extra confidence if you feel the part too.

6) Ask Away

Make sure you’ve prepared some questions to ask. It’s easier to show your enthusiasm and engagement when you take time to ask them throughout your interview and is a great way to impress your interviewer. Don’t let there be crickets at the end when they ask that all important, ‘do you have any questions for me?’

Some of our ideas to start you off include asking – ‘Would there be any opportunities for personal development?’ or ‘Can you tell me more about the daily tasks I will be carrying out?’

We hope that these tips leave you feeling more confident and ready for your interview.

Don’t forget to take some time to destress and socialise away from work and interview

pressure; interviews are a chance for you to showcase yourself so be yourself and take each one as a learning opportunity.
