Three wins from four as the University of Sheffield shine in Varsity Hockey

The University of Sheffield claimed three out of the four points available in their Varsity hockey fixture against Sheffield Hallam, following an exhilarating day of action at Norton Sports Park.

The results capped an already impressive day of varsity competition for Sheffield, who secured six out of a possible eight points across the day.

Women’s 2s:

Captained by Jessica Morrison, Sheffield Women’s 2s entered their fixture on the back of an emphatic 11-0 victory at last year’s varsity.

The team took no time making a similar imprint this year, taking a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime. Sheffield’s early dominance ignited the black-and-gold crowd at Norton, with chants ringing around the ground.

Despite turbulent wind, Sheffield took complete control in the second half, confidently intercepting Hallam passes, and leading a relentless attacking charge. The team’s dominance paid off as goals continued to flow, running out comfortable 8-0 winners.

Men’s 2s:

The second match of the day saw a tightly contested battle between Sheffield Men’s 2s and Hallam Men’s 2s, which opened with a cautious tempo as both sides looked to settle into the game.

Tom Small gave Sheffield the breakthrough at the end of the first quarter and scored again in the third to double the home side’s advantage.

The game seemed to be heading towards a comfortable conclusion before a Hallam goal against the run of play in the final quarter shifted the momentum and set up a tense finale.

As both sets of fans traded chants from the sidelines, the noise grew as the home side were pushed to defend their lead.

In the closing minutes of the game Sheffield were awarded a penalty stroke due to a rash Hallam foul, which was calmly converted by Ollie Harris, securing a 3-1 win for the Sheffield 2s.

Women’s 1s:

The crowd at Norton were entertained by an impressive interval performances by Sheffield Pom Cheerleading prior to the game, setting a bustling atmosphere ahead of the day’s first team fixtures.

The third match of the day saw Sheffield Women’s 1s face Hallam Women’s 1’s in a contest where defensive performances took the spotlight.

The deadlock was held until the final minute of the third quarter when a strong Sheffield attack forced through the Hallam defence to score, sparking the Sheffield crowd into full voice once again.

The Sheffield advantage was doubled late in the final quarter, sealing a 2-0 win for Hannah Porter’s team.

The victory ensured a clean sweep for Sheffield’s Women’s teams on the day.

Men’s 1s:

The final game of the day saw Sheffield Mens 1s face Hallam Men’s 1s in a fixture that has recently been dominated by the visitors.

Determined to change this trend, a lively Sheffield team held firm against promising Hallam attacks.

The persistence was rewarded minutes before halftime as a well-worked penalty corner allowed  Shen Wi Lim to fire the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Sheffield continued to threaten after the break, striking the post in the third quarter as they searched for a second goal.

However, Hallam found an equaliser with just twelve minutes remaining, rallying their supporters into life and raising the intensity of the contest.

With just four minutes to go, Hallam converted their own penalty corner, driving the ball home with pace to take the lead, causing wild celebrations between the players and their fans.

As Sheffield looked for the late equaliser, the Hallam defence stood strong before adding a third goal from another penalty corner just two minutes later.

The 3-1 result ensured Hallam claimed the final hockey varsity point, but Sheffield’s three victories meant the day ultimately belonged to the black-and-gold side.
