Touring Production Review: &Juliet

& Juliet is a feel-good musical based on the famous William Shakespeare ‘Romeo and Juliet’. It tells the story of an alternative ending- what if Juliet didn’t die when finding Romeo deceased. The show was created by the writers of the beloved Netflix show Schitt’s Creek which guarantees laughter and playfulness. It has won 3 Olivier Awards along with impressive touring feats around the country from London’s West End to here in Sheffield.

I was fortunate enough to see the show on Wednesday 21st May at 7:30pm at the Lyceum Theatre. The show began and maintained constant energy and excitement throughout the duration. During the first half, I couldn’t believe how quickly the time was moving and was genuinely disappointed when the curtain fell to signal the interval which is always a good sign! The band was amazing and the playlist mostly consisted of pop anthems from Britney Spears to Ariana Grande. The discography stemmed from Max Martin (Swedish record producer) which was fantastic since the audience knew many of the songs already due to his prominence in the music scene and it really added to the storyline since the songs related to the plot and situations in the show unbelievably well.

The second half was equally as good as the first half which is a difficult feat, especially with the bar set high from the first half. A stand out performance for me was Dr Ranj Singh who played Lance. Dr Ranj is a well-known household name but considering this was his musical theatre debut, you could never tell due to his stellar performance. Also, Jay McGuiness played famous playwright William Shakespeare with real passion and his own stage persona shone through his character. Lara Denning, who played Anne Hathaway, performed the most groundbreaking solo of the show in the second half which had the audience captivated and in awe at her amazing voice. The whole production cast were fantastic and props were used to the correct degree without overpowering the scenes but adding hidden details and meanings.

Everything was so well thought out and linked throughout the show which left me feeling satisfied and excited to see the show again (although this is my second time seeing it already)! This show really epitomized a fun and care-free nature so it is a perfect escape from the exam season or anytime life needs an injection of colour, confetti and laughter.

If I could give this show more than 5 stars, I would!
