University ultimate players win big at BUCS

Two University of Sheffield students helped to claim the title of Division 1 National champions in ultimate frisbee last weekend.

Josh Hanham and Rhodri Williams represented the university at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Indoor Nationals held in Hounslow.

The team beat the likes of the University of Leeds, University of Edinburgh, and Loughborough University to win the championship.

Hanham and Williams are both part of the University of Sheffield’s Elite Sport Performance Scheme (ESPS), a scholarship that provides support to successful athletes who wish to thrive in both their academic and sporting careers.

In February 2023, they were selected to play for Great Britain in the World Under 24 Championships.

Ultimate frisbee, otherwise simply known as ultimate, is a high-energy sport that combines non-stop movement, athletic endurance, and aerial passing skills.

It differs from other sports through its focus on self-officiating which can be seen at every level, even international.

This tradition of sportsmanship places the responsibility of fair play on the competitors rather than referees, and is called the ‘Spirit of the Game’.

BUCS Nationals will take place in Sheffield between 23 and 25 February, with events including indoor athletics, badminton, karate, and long-course swimming.
