Utopia Theatre workshop announced in collaboration with BAME Engineers Society

In preparation for their Yoruba retelling of Macbeth, Crown of Blood, Utopia Theatre is collaborating with BAME Engineers society for a workshop exploring movement and free writing inspired by the play.

Previously receiving a 5-star review from Forge Press for their staging of Death and the King’s Horseman, Utopia Theatre is a charitable organisation that aims to demonstrate “the rich cultural heritage of Africa’s theatre canon, and in so doing, dispel stereotypes and encourage authentic voices from the African diaspora”. They commission and devise new plays, as well as re-interpreting classics, and reach out to the community through masterclasses and workshops.

BAME Engineers Society put on a variety of events focused on industry and networking, as well as opportunities for cultural celebrations and socials. Their core mission is to help BAME students get a headstart in their professional journeys, but also to encourage extracurricular hobbies through sports, socials and collaborations.

Utopia Theatre’s collaboration with BAME Engineers Society takes the form of an immersive workshop with free writing and movement, open to all members of the university. Crown of Blood, a Yoruba retelling of Macbeth, will be used as a stimulus, and participants will use this to explore legacy and destiny through words and action, accompanied by theatre makers from Utopia. BAME Engineers Society say “this is a chance to try something new, meet others, and dive into storytelling in a whole new way. Who knows where the evening might take you?”

This event is a great opportunity to explore Yoruba and African theatre, and work with an incredible company putting on representative and powerful pieces of theatre. It will take place on Tuesday 28th of October, 6-8pm. It is located at Utopia Theatre, 11 Rockingham Gate and costs £8 for non-members, £6 for members of BAME Engineers Society. There will also be a discounted dinner at Unit Burgers afterwards, for a chance to socialise and discuss the workshop!
