It’s a long standing debate every year – but what really are the best Christmas Films? With such a large selection to choose from, here’s a breakdown of some of the favourites, spanning all genres so there’s always something for everyone!
Classic
There are some films that simply must be watched at this time of year, no matter how old they are or how many times you’ve seen them. It’s a Wonderful Life often ranks at the top of many Christmas movie lists, and it’s understandable given its interesting tale, which ends with all the joy you want from a movie this season. The real focus on family here also helps to secure a top spot. Another family based movie is Home Alone. A great blend of comedy with a genuine heartfelt message at the centre of it all. Plus the sequel Lost in New York is just as fun! The Polar Express often goes a bit forgotten now, but despite its slightly strange looking animation style now, it’s still a fun story with catchy songs that brings back some classic childhood memories, cementing it as one of the best.

Comedy
Who doesn’t want a good laugh in December? Personally, Christmas doesn’t start until I’ve watched Nativity. The jokes never get old, and even when you can quote every line it’s a must watch; a very British classic. Elf can’t go unmentioned, with Will Ferrell’s performance remaining endearing whilst hilarious to this day. Perhaps underrated though is The Muppets Christmas Carol, a twist on the Dickens classic that makes it a bit more cheery for the holiday season whilst still keeping the original story and so making it lots of fun!
Romance
There is nothing more heartwarming than a rom-com at Christmas, and what better ones than The Holiday and Love Actually. With The Holiday you get two love stories for the price of one, each with their own unique feel, a great blend of a cosy British feel with the more sunny American side. Love Actually offers even more stories than that, with a mix of tales that show all sorts of dynamics, highlighting loved ones at this time of year.

Something a bit different
Are they Christmas films or are they something else? What really matters is they’re a great watch. Obviously Die Hard is at the centre of this argument, and the action packed movie is definitely a great film regardless of when you watch it. Tim Burton’s not quite Christmas not quite Halloween classic The Nightmare before Christmas also deserves a place here. Despite the spooky aesthetic it will absolutely start to get you into the right spirit!
