Sheffield’s Student Union opens first Swap Shop

In an effort to encourage University of Sheffield students to reduce their reliance on fast fashion, the Student Union opened its first ever designated swap shop space.

A swap shop is a place where people can donate their used or new clothing for free, and exchange it for another item they want or need. Swap shops are considered to be an environmentally friendly alternative to throwing out clothes, or buying new ones from stores.

The SU’s shop opened on April 25 and is located on Level 3 of the SU, in front of the main staircase and across from Our Shop. Students are encouraged to bring any unwanted clothes they have to the shop, and take any other shirts, pants or jackets in return.

The shop is open from Monday to Thursday, 10:00pm – 3:00pm.

Prior to the shop’s opening, temporary swap shop spaces were held in the SU by environmental advocacy societies such as the Green and Bop and People and Plant
