Sheffield Wednesday shock league-leaders West Brom in five-goal thriller

Goals from Josh Windass and Anthony Musaba, and an own-goal, clinched Sheffield Wednesday ’s first league win since the opening day against the league leaders West Bromwich Albion.

Wednesday made two changes from defeat last time out at Luton, with Ike Ugbo and Michael Ihiekwe coming in for Michael Smith and the suspended Di’Shon Bernard.

West Brom made just one change from victory against Plymouth Argyle, with former Barnsley man Alex Mowatt dropping to the bench and being replaced by Ousmane Diakite.

The first shot of the game came in the sixth minute courtesy of Josh Windass but the Owls man dragged his shot wide from 30 yards.

After a good passage of play from the Owls in midfield, the ball found Marvin Johnson with aces of space on the edge of the penalty box on the left, and with a lucky deflection, grabbed Wednesday’s first goal of the game – going down as an own-goal.

The away side had the next chance through Furlong, who met the end of a Swift set piece delivery, but he glanced his header over.

It was West Brom again who had the next chance to score, this time Josh Maja’s shot being deflected out for a corner.

Then, with 23 minutes on the clock, Wednesday doubled their advantage. A bumped ball forward from Akin Famewo met the head of Josh Windass who lifted his header over Palmer in the WBA net.

It was nearly three for Sheffield Wednesday, but captain Barry Bannan couldn’t prevent his long distance shot going over the crossbar.

Before the whistle for halftime blew, it was the away side who had the better of the chances. Beadle made himself big to prevent Karlan Grant from close distance, while Fellows saw his range from distance fly high and wide over the bar.

Halftime: Wednesday 2 West Brom 0

The away side made one change at the break, with former Barnsley man Alex Mowatt on at halftime to replace Diakite.

A John Swift delivery from a free kick around 30 yards out tested Wednesday early in the second period, but it was easily cleared.

Kobacki headed wide from a Valery cross after a nice passing between the Wednesday wing-back, Charles and Liam Palmer.

West Brom got themselves back into the game after Josh Maja bagged his seventh league goal of the season from close range, after a cross from the right.

Wednesday then made a double change at the top end of the pitch, with Smith and Musaba on for Ugbo and Johnson.

Musaba’s first action was to be involved in a penalty shout, when he was brought down on the byline after sprinting inside the box. The referee indicated a corner, rather than a penalty.

Not long after, West Brom had their equaliser. Former Barnsley man Alex Mowatt reacted quickest on the edge of the area after a Furlong long-throw was dealt with properly.

Then just moments later, Wednesday took the lead through Anthony Musaba. The Wednesday substitute tapped home a Barry Bannan delivery from just yards out to reinstate Wednesday’s lead.

After some dogged defending, Sheffield Wednesday held firm to hold on for their first league victory since the opening day.
