As the weather gets cooler and the start of a new year at university draws closer, the anticipation of being back in Sheffield grows exponentially, both university life and the city itself have so much to offer. Here are some suggestions for making the most of your time in this vibrant, beautiful city.
Where else to begin but the Peak District? For picturesque views and lush greenery, look no further than the hills surrounding Sheffield, which are as close as a ten-minute drive from Endcliffe Village. Whether you’re going for a wild swim in Rivelin, climbing peaks as high as 2,000 feet, or on a hungover trek with your flatmates, there is a spot for everyone. With plenty of buses and trains going from town, it’s an easy journey and a must-see destination for any Sheffield student, whether it’s a sunny spring day or during mid-autumn when the leaves are changing.
Next up is The Leadmill, a legendary music venue and home to Leadmill Fridays. This club is an institution. I have so many fond memories of nights out here during my first year, and if you’re an indie rock fan, it’s not one to miss. With Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and other British icons soundtracking your nights, it’s perfect for a classic night out. There is a reason why it has sustained its iconic status despite being a bit further from university.
If your night out leaves you needing a recovery morning, I recommend the vast range of eateries in Broomhill. Cafés like Bon and The Grind are perfect for a coffee date with friends. For a brunch spot with a beautiful interior, be sure to visit Cawa. Nam Song, a Vietnamese restaurant, offers incredible food and a great ambience regardless of the time of day. Another gem is Nottingham House, a traditional pub with legendary pies that has been raved about by everyone who has visited.
Sheffield has a thriving live music scene, something I’m hoping to explore more this year. I’m frequently recommended Dorothy Pax, a pub that doubles as a music venue and is home to some brilliant jazz. Sidney & Matilda is another option, boasting a range of gigs, comedy shows and film screenings in a cool multi-level building that was once a paper factory.
Varsity—the annual face off against Sheffield Hallam’s sports teams—is a key part of the University of Sheffield’s calendar. I recommend getting tickets to the ice hockey game, which was the competition’s opener last year. Taking place at the Utilita Arena, it’s a must-see whether you’re a die-hard ice hockey fan or have never seen the sport before; the atmosphere is incredible and the game is so much fun to watch. Just beware of inter-university rivalries getting out of hand…
A quintessential university experience is finding yourself on a society bar crawl down West Street, wearing a ridiculous costume on a Wednesday night. Joining a society is a definite bucket list item. There are so many to choose from, and you’ll end up with a lot of stories to tell.
Another perfect night out can be had at PopTarts. This club night runs every Saturday at the Foundry, inside the Student’s Union, and has a 30-year legacy. You’ll find classic pop as well as some newer tracks, several rooms for your particular taste in music, and a brilliant DJ who will (sometimes) take requests. Grab a VK in each hand and get ready for “Murder on the Dancefloor.” The Foundry has a lot of great nights out, but this is a good place to start.
Finally, catching the sunset at Bole Hill is always a cute way to end your day. Located at the top of Crookes, you’ll have to climb steep roads to get there, but at the end, you’ll be rewarded with a scenic point offering a stunning view over the city. It’s definitely worth it and an amazing spot close to home.
