Tom Bird announced as new Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres

Today Sheffield Theatres has announced the appointment of Tom Bird as Chief Executive, a role he will begin in early 2023. Working alongside Artistic Director, Robert Hastie and Interim CEO (to stay on as Deputy CEO), Bookey Oshin, Bird said ‘I am totally thrilled to be joining Sheffield Theatres.’

Hastie said, ‘Tom joins us at an exciting time, following our special 50th anniversary year.’ Sheffield Theatres is the largest producing theatre complex outside London, and consists of the iconic trio of the Crucible, the Lyceum and the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse (formerly the Studio). In November this year, the Crucible and the Playhouse celebrated their 50th anniversary, having opened to the public back in 1971.

Since then, Sheffield Theatres has offered an extensive range of theatrical and musical outputs, and Bird’s work as Chief Executive is set to bring yet more creativity to Sheffield. Bird ‘brings a wealth of experience’ (Hastie), from producing a tour of Hamlet to 189 countries as Executive Producer at Shakespeare’s Globe, to operating as Chief Executive at York Theatre Royal, from 2017 to now.

Bird extended his gratitude to all those at York Theatre Royal ‘and the wider community, for their support over the last 5 years.’ He said, ‘I can’t wait to work with Rob, Bookey and the whole of Sheffield’s exceptional team.’

Lord Kerslake, Chair of Sheffield Theatres Trust Board, said, ‘In Tom we have appointed a driven, experienced and creative leader who will help shape the next chapter of this world-class organisation.’

With Bird in charge, Sheffield Theatres promises a rip-roaring 2023, with a myriad of spell-binding shows. Get your tickets here: https://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/new-2023-shows-now-on-sale
